Behold my entry for :iconizka197:'s Challenge Event 13: Steampunk! I made this with colored pencils and Abney Park music!

Well, I was overconfident that I would place, but I didn't even get an honorable mention. I guess I should have drawn a girl just standing there with no or minimal background like most of the other contestants did. Oh well, lesson learned.

:iconblackrose-1::iconblackrose-2::iconblackrose-3::iconblackrose-4::iconblackrose-5::iconblackrose-6::iconblackrose-7x:

Amaril looked at the flyer in his hand, then at the gathering of fanciful airships.

"This is it, the Great Airship Race! Oh, please, let Miriam be here!"

It did not matter that the seaside town was bedecked in fluttering banners and vendors were tempting the crowd with sweet lemonade, cotton candy, and souvenirs. Amaril's only focus was finding one particular human girl in a town full of human girls, so pretty in their best dresses. Miriam's best dress would just be her plain work clothes. There was no room for fancy ribbons and lace in her budget.

A twinkle at the starting line interruped Amaril's search. The dreamstone on his forehead felt like champagne bubbles fizzing.
"It cannot be!" the reem exclaimed to himself.

He set his thoughts of finding Miriam aside and dashed to the starting line. Skidding to a stop right in front of a display case, he saw it contained a jewel just like the one he kept hidden with his top hat.

"Lovely jewel, eh? Whoever wins this is lucky indeed! No more shovelling coal, just pop it in the boiler and you'll have enough energy to power an airship for a lifetime!" an old gentleman told Amaril. "Well, it's time to get this race started."

"No, you do not understand!" Amaril protested as the gentleman walked away, "This is not a jewel; it is part of a living being!"

The old man had already stepped onto a stage. He announced that the Great Airship Race was about to begin and then raised a pistol into the air.

"On your mark, get set--"

CRASH!

All faces turned in Amaril's direction. He rose, from a squatting position, next to the shattered display case he had toppled over. The prize glittered in his hand.

"Go?" he said with a sheepish tone in his voice.

"Someone stop that thief!" the old announcer cried.

"It it not a robbery, it is a rescue! I am so sorry!" Amaril explained while speeding away.

Leaping like a gazelle, he boarded an airship that was trying to get a head start. From the railing, he scanned the receding crowd for Miriam's face, but found no sight of her. He shoved the dreamstone into his pocket.

"I guess I will never find her now," the reem said and then sighed with disappointment.

"Am I the one you're looking for?"

Amaril turned around only to find a cutlass at his throat. Its weilder was an airship pirate with bouncy, red ringlets and she was backed by two others of her kind.

"Who are you?" she demanded.

"A stowaway, come to sabotage our ship!" accused a scowling pirate with a black braid.

"A handsome stowaway!" chimed in a curly haired brunette with too much glee.

"You can just leave the same way you came, stowaway," the captain ordered Amaril.

"But, we are so high up now! I will surely die!"

The captain flicked her head to the side and her crew pushed Amaril over the railing. Screaming with the most undignified falsetto he could scream with, the reem bounced from airship to airship, like a living game of hot potato. He fell right past Miriam, who was too busy nailing a loose board back onto the deck of the rickety airship she was working on. Amaril's descent continued until he landed in the arms of a figurehead.

"No unauthorized passengers are permitted," the figurehead said with a deadpan, mechanical voice.

"An automaton?" the reem wondered before the figurehead dropped him into the sea below.
